Course Summary: Competency-Based Assessment in Chemistry – Class XII

This LMS course provides teachers and learners with a comprehensive understanding of competency-based assessment (CBA) as envisioned in the National Education Policy (NEP 2020) and CBSE’s current assessment framework. Designed specifically for Class XII Chemistry, the course focuses on shifting from rote memorization to meaningful learning, application, analysis, and problem-solving.

Participants will explore the structure and rationale of competency-based assessments, including real-life contexts, higher-order thinking skills, scientific reasoning, and practical-based competencies aligned with the Chemistry curriculum. The course explains the design of competency-focused questions—MCQs, case-based items, assertion-reason questions, and application-oriented problems—supported by exemplars and best practices.

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Understand the principles and need for competency-based assessment in Chemistry
  • Integrate learning outcomes with assessment design
  • Construct valid, reliable, and engaging CBA questions for Class XII
  • Analyze student responses to identify learning gaps and guide instruction
  • Apply CBA approaches to theory, practicals, and real-life chemical contexts

This course empowers teachers to adopt assessment for learning rather than assessment of learning, fostering deeper conceptual understanding, scientific temperament, and 21st-century skills among students.
